When war broke out in 1939, the German Fallschirmjager, the world's first paratroopers to be used in large numbers, were at the forefront. They carried out daring assaults on strategic targets, such as the fortress at Eben Emael, which allowed the following panzers to conquer Europe. Their greatest achievement as a paratrooper force was the intense fighting they conducted when they seized Crete in 1941, facing a larger British and Commonwealth forces. However, this costly victory meant that they were never again used en masse. Instead, small units continued to operate by glider and parachute, famous for rescuing Italian leader Mussolini and raiding behind American lines in the Ardennes. Their finest hour came during the intense fighting as they occupied the monastery at Monte Cassino for months, earning themselves the nickname 'Green Devils'. The German Paratroopers were arguably the toughest in a tough army.

To recreate World War II combat on a tabletop, use dice, model troops, tanks and the rules constructed by Bolt Action against one or more opponents. Each side will require painted model troops, representing the soldiers, guns and tanks of your chosen armies. Tabletop encounters take place according to twelve closely defined battle scenarios that explain how forces are deployed and how victory is achieved.
